How much process is enough?

Customising a software development process to suit the style and size of a project is a commonly accepted software development best practice. One size does not fit all. However, the reality is that the ability to successfully match the appropriate level of the process to the project is often determined by the skills and experience of the practitioners on the project.  Knowing when to stop doing a task, or whether to do the task at all is just as important as knowing what tasks should be done. This is important across the entire project lifecycle, but is often most important in the requirements gathering phase as it is critical to know when to stop gathering and start doing.

 

This presentation provides some guidelines based on real world examples for determining the right level of process for a requirements gathering phase based on project size, complexity, criticality and level of agility.
