Smart People, Dumb Mistakes: Business Analysts Must be Emotionally Intelligent

This presentation shows that smart and successful people are not immune to dumb mistakes when it comes to emotional intelligence.  Without emotional intelligence, otherwise smart business analysts are at risk of making dumb mistakes which can set back or derail their careers.  BAs may also fail in more subtle ways if they lack interpersonal skills and charisma.  Otherwise great BAs may find their careers stalled based on their ability to relate to, influence, or collaborate with others.

 

Research shows that emotional intelligence (EQ) is just as important to BAs as IQ or industry knowledgeIn fact, recent research has shown that professionals must have emotional intelligence to succeed and successful professionals need different EQ competencies to manage different types of projects.  Fortunately, these emotional intelligence competencies can be learned.

Anthony Mersino, PMP

Founder, Project Advisors Group

Anthony Mersino is the founder of the Project Advisors Group, a consulting firm that helps project leaders reach their potential.  With over 22 years experience as a project manager, he has worked as an independent project management consultant for ARAMARK, USG, Abbott Laboratories, MWH Global, and the National Opinion Research Center.  He recently led a program team of 60 IT specialists to develop custom IT solutions to support education reform in the country of Qatar.  Before founding the Project Advisors Group, Anthony led projects and programs for IBM, Unisys, FutureNext, and Ameritech.

 

Anthony has been teaching project management and leadership courses for ESI International and Northwestern University since 2002.  Anthony’s interest in project leadership issues led him to study how to apply emotional intelligence to improve project management.  He recently authored Emotional Intelligence for Project Managers; the People Skills You Need to Achieve Outstanding Results which was published by AMACOM in 2007. 

 

Anthony has an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, and earned his M.B.A. from Loyola College in Maryland.  He is a member of the Association for Information Technology Professionals, the Project Management Institute, and the American Society for the Advancement of Project Management.  He has been a PMP since 1995.
