Business Process Institutionalisation and the BA
Description Speaker(s)

The wide ranging deployment of Enterprise scale packages through the medium and large organizational sectors implies that benefits are recognised by the adopters. Substantial adoption implies that the adaptability of the packages is genuine, and that the suitability of the implicit Enterprise business models is accepted across industry sectors. Recent research at Monash University has shown that the adaptability and suitability of Enterprise packages is in fact quite constrained.

Adaptability of these packages is limited by the software’s architecture so that configuring the package for your business only works well if your business can operate within the range of parameterized options available in the package. An implication of this constraint that was identified in the research is that the common “configurable” business processes are becoming institutionalized throughout industry. What then is the implication for the Business Analyst wanting to improve or innovate processes that are supported by the Enterprise package? This question will be addressed, explaining the outcomes revealed by the research.

Learning  Objectives

• To understand some limitations of package deployment
• To identify innovation options for the BA in a constrained environment
